ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — Florida reported 21,683 new cases of COVID-19, the state’s highest one-day total since the start of the pandemic, according to federal health data released Saturday, as its theme park resorts again started asking visitors to wear masks indoors.
The state has become the new national epicenter for the virus, accounting for around a fifth of all new cases in the U.S.
Republican Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis has resisted mandatory mask mandates and vaccine requirements, and along with the state Legislature, has limited local officials’ ability to impose restrictions meant to stop the spread of COVID-19. DeSantis on Friday barred school districts from requiring students to wear masks when classes resume next month.
The latest numbers were recorded on Friday and released on Saturday on the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's website. The figures show how quickly the number of cases is rising in the Sunshine State: only a day earlier, Florida reported 17,093 new daily cases. The previous peak in Florida had been 19,334 cases reported on Jan. 7, before the availability of vaccinations became widespread.
The Florida Hospital Association said Friday that statewide COVID-19 hospitalizations are nearing last year’s peak, and one of the state's largest health care systems, AdventHealth’s Central Florida Division, this week advised it would no longer be conducting non-emergency surgeries in order to free up resources for COVID-19 patients.
Universal Orlando Resort and SeaWorld on Saturday became the latest theme park resorts in Florida to again ask visitors to wear masks indoors, with Universal also ordering its employees to wear face coverings to protect against COVID-19, which has been surging across the state.
All workers at Universal’s Florida park on Saturday started being required to wear masks while indoors as the employees returned to practicing social distancing. The home to Harry Potter and Despicable Me rides also asked visitors to follow federal and local health guidelines by voluntarily wearing face coverings indoors.
“The health and safety of our guests and team members is always our top priority,” Universal said in a statement.
Health officials on Friday announced that coronavirus cases in Florida had jumped 50% over the past week with COVID-19 hospitalizations in the state nearing last year’s peak.
SeaWorld on Saturday posted on its website that it was recommending that visitors follow recently updated federal recommendations and wear face coverings while indoors.
The change in policy this week at the theme park resorts came after the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommended that everyone wear masks indoors, regardless of vaccination status.
Crosstown rival Walt Disney World started requiring employees and guests older than 2 to wear masks on Friday, but it also went a step further. The Walt Disney Company said in a statement that it will be requiring all salaried and non-union hourly employees in the U.S. who work on site to be fully vaccinated.
Disney employees who aren’t already vaccinated will have 60 days to do so and those still working from home will need to show proof of vaccination before returning. Disney said it was discussing the vaccine requirements with the union, and added that all new hires will be required to be fully vaccinated before starting work at the company.

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — Jack Bushong was sure he was going to lose his job.
It was the night of March 8, 1994. Working at the National Weather Service, Bushong's radar was lighting up with stuff he'd never seen before.
He was on the phone with an Ottawa County emergency dispatcher who was looking for help identifying lights in the sky over Holland. The dispatcher was getting a lot of calls. Police officers were calling in, too.
When Bushong found out his phone call had been recorded, Bushong said he was "really scared" and lost sleep over it. He fretted about what people were going to say about what he was seeing on his screen.
"Just that people think you're a kook," he said, or that "you're lying, you're not credible. I'm supposed to be a scientist and skeptical."
Bushong was seeing images on his radar that corresponded to what people were calling in from the ground. He had to control his radar by hand to zero in on the sky south of his station in Muskegon.
"Oh my God, what is that?" the recorded dispatch call captured him saying in a startled voice once he had zeroed in.
Listen: Audio recording of calls to and by Ottawa County dispatchers about a UFO sighting along the lakeshore on March 8, 1994. (via archive.org)
He said he went through his mental checklist about all the weather phenomena and technical glitches he knew about and what he was seeing didn't fit any of them.
He saw what appeared to be solid objects "coming together and coming apart."
"Moving about 20 miles in each jump," he recalled. "They were hovering, then jumping. Hovering and jumping."
After watching them for a while, they appeared to be forming a wide triangle that moved out over Lake Michigan. He said they looked solid.
"It was a flying tin can," he said.

Despite his worry about losing his job, Bushong went on to a promotion, a move to a bigger weather station, a forecasting award and eventual retirement. He said the NWS treated him well even though some individuals criticized him and dismissed what he saw. So he clammed up about it.
"I kept my mouth shut, and I learned that pretty quickly," he said.
He wasn't the only one. There has been considerable national reporting about pilots and others deciding it's better to keep quiet about such sightings. The long-time government approach may have contributed to that: It dismissed UFO sightings as common stuff people just weren't seeing right.
After a number of sightings in Michigan in the 1960s, then-U.S. Rep. Gerald R. Ford, of Grand Rapids, Michigan, wrote a letter calling for congressional investigations and demanding the government stop "misleading the public."
It took more than 50 years and efforts by later members of Congress who demanded the intelligence community produce a report and make it public.
That happened this summer. In the report, the government admits that people have seen things that nobody can explain. It even released video by U.S. military pilots.
For Bushong, the release of the report was like ringing a bell. It got him talking again.
"It has everything to do with it," he said.
He's now thinking about writing a scientific paper about what he saw on the lakeshore in '94.
He said what he saw on radar looks a lot like what military pilots have reported seeing.
"I guess I've been waiting for this vindication," he said, "which I didn't think I was going to get all my life."
He was going to just let what he saw die out.
"But now with the, basically, military coming out and saying the same thing I saw 30 years ago, I can finally say to people, 'I told you so,'" Bushong said.
The 1994 sighting had a lasting impact on others who saw it. Among them were Holly Graves and her family. They were among the 911 callers watching slowly rotating lights from their front yard.
"It was like Christmas lights," she recalled.
The incident on the lakeshore got a lot of media attention. Graves said some people were interested in what she saw, but others were hurtful. She kept her kids out of school for a while.
"They just went through a really hard time," she said. "They know what they saw, but it's like everybody still laughed at you."
People forget that the 'U' in UFO stands for unidentified, meaning nobody knows what the phenomenon is. That's never stopped people from speculating. Sometimes they choose sides and even get nasty.
"They accused us of being in the back yard smoking weed, doing drugs with our kids," Graves said.

Her now-adult children don't want to talk about the sighting. It's different for Graves.
"I'm glad my family got to see it," she said. "I really am. It's like once in a lifetime. It's an experience I'll take to my grave with me."
Nearly 30 years later, it still moves her.
"I wish everybody'd see it," she said. "I do. I wish everybody would see it because it was the experience of a lifetime."
In honor of National Avocado Day, Chipotle is offering free guacamole for customers who purchase full-priced entrees via the Chipotle app or website. To redeem the offer, guests in the U.S. and Canada must use the promo code AVO2021 at checkout.
“National Avocado Day, our most popular 'Chipotday,' has long given our fans something extra to celebrate on July 31," said Chris Brandt, Chipotle’s chief marketing officer, in a statement shared earlier this week. "We're excited to continue the tradition this year by offering fresh, hand-mashed guac for free via our digital channels only with the promo code AVO2021."
As Chipotle notes, the offer is valid only for customers ordering online at Chipotle’s website or via its app, and not in restaurants. Additional restrictions and details can be found at Chipotle’s U.S. and Canadian websites.
In addition to free guac, Chipotle is currently offering free delivery on select orders placed via its websites or app in the U.S. and Canada. The offer, which is not valid on orders placed through third-party delivery sites, extends through Aug. 1.
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) – A bear ran into a Tennessee restaurant Friday afternoon, according to visitors who witnessed the incident.
An employee at Crawdaddy's in Gatlinburg confirmed the bear had run up the front staircase and entered the restaurant, but quickly turned around and left.
Kacie Faulling Myers was visiting the area from South Carolina with her family when the bear made an appearance as they were walking outside.

"Can you imagine sitting in the restaurant and a bear coming out?" she asked as she took a video from across the street.
Visitors can be seen running toward the restaurant with their cell phones out.
Faulling Myers snapped photos from across the street which showed the bear wandering along the sidewalk, not far from a crowd of people. The bear even looks up at a man standing only feet away beside a trash can.
The Crawdaddy's employee said the bear knocked someone over outside, though information on the person's condition is unclear. An ambulance was called to the area, according to Gatlinburg Police.
At the time, officials with the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency had reminded people that Gatlinburg is part of the bears’ natural habitat and roaming area. The agency encouraged people to stay “bear aware.” On its website, the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency also shares plenty of guidelines and general "things to know" for locals and visitors about keeping safe in the bears' habitats.
The Southeast is home to some 72,000 black bears, according to BearWise. More information on bears, and how to stay safe, can be found at the BearWise program page.
CHICAGO (WGN) — Officials for the Lollapalooza music festival announced on Friday that masks will be required of all patrons in any indoor spaces at Grant Park as of Saturday, based on advice from the Chicago Department of Public Health.
This year's festival officially kicked off Thursday, July 29. At the time, attendees only needed to provide vaccination cards or proof of a negative COVID-19 test for admission each day.
The new mask requirement is now in place for all attendees at indoor spaces, whether vaccinated or unvaccinated. Unvaccinated attendees are also required to "wear a mask throughout your time onsite," per the festival's health policy.

The announcement comes as federal, state and local health officials grapple with a rapid rise of COVID-19 cases, many of which can be attributed to the more contagious delta variant. Illinois alone has reported over 11,600 new COVID-19 cases over the last 7 days.
Organizers of this year's festival, meanwhile, have claimed that 90% of Thursday's attendees provided proof of vaccination, while only around 600 people were turned away for not providing vaccine cards or negative test results.
Lollapalooza 2021 will continue through Sunday, Aug. 1, with performances from Post Malone and Journey scheduled for Saturday night, and Foo Fighters and DaBaby on Sunday, among others.
(KTLA) – Charges were filed Friday against the suspect accused of shooting two people during an "unprovoked" attack inside a California movie theater earlier this week, killing one of the victims.
Joseph Jimenez, 20, was charged with murder and attempted murder in the July 26 shooting in Corona, according to a news release from the Riverside County District Attorney's Office. Officials have also filed a special circumstance allegation of lying in wait.
Investigators say 19-year-old Anthony Barajas and 18-year-old Rylee Goodrich were shot in the head during a Monday night showing of “The Forever Purge” inside the Edwards Theater at the Crossings shopping center.
Both victims were discovered when workers went inside the theater to clean up after the movie screening, police said.
Goodrich was pronounced dead at the scene. A growing memorial in her honor has been set up outside of the theater. A remembrance for Goodrich is planned for 6:30 p.m. on Friday at New Beginnings Community Church Norco.
A vigil will also be held outside the movie theater at 8 p.m. Saturday.

Barajas remains on life support at a local hospital. A vigil will be held for him at 7 p.m. Friday in the grotto at Mater Dei High School, where he graduated.
A GoFundMe page created for Goodrich’s funeral expenses had raised nearly $60,000 as of Friday morning. Another GoFundMe for Barajas had raised more than $66,000 for medical expenses.
Jimenez was arrested in El Cerrito, California, on Tuesday night, the DA's news release stated.
Joseph Jimenez, 20, is seen in a photo provided by the Corona Police Department on July 28, 2021.
A firearm that matched the caliber of weapon and was believed to be used in the killing was found where Jimenez was located, the news release stated.
Investigators are still searching for a reason why shooting occurred.
“We do not have a motive for this heinous, unprovoked crime,” Corona police Cpl. Tobias Kouroubacalis said in a news conference Wednesday.
Jimenez is being held on $2 million bail. He appeared in court Friday, and his arraignment was postponed until Aug. 5.
As Jimenez was leaving the courtroom, Goodrich's father confronted the defendant, appearing to want to have some words with him, video showed.
“Look at me, bro. Look at me,” the father could be heard saying as deputies escorted Jimenez out of the courtroom.
The Police Department has asked anyone who was inside the theater or in the area between 9 p.m. and 11:45 p.m. to reach out with any information. Police can be contacted at 951-736-2330, option 3. Callers can also reach out to Senior Detective Dan Neagu at 951-739-4916.
FESTUS, Mo. (KTVI) – The closing of a chimpanzee compound in Missouri has a unique meaning for a man who says he’s been plagued by the place for 20 years.
Jason Coats, of Festus, has had a felony conviction on his record after a chimp escape at the facility decades ago.
“It’s a good thing that justice has finally played out even though it’s taken 20 years,” Coats said.
Coats was just 17 years old when he says he was confronted with the unimaginable: an escaped chimp trying to attack his family.
In 2001, Coats and two friends arrived back at his home from a trip to Dairy Queen. He lived with his parents at the time, next door to Connie Casey’s chimpanzee complex. He says three escaped chimps came onto his family's property and he felt forced to shoot one named Suzie.
“It was absolutely self-defense,” Coats said. “Three chimpanzees were trying to attack us. They threw my dog across the backyard and I tried to scare them off. They ran up, chased us back to the car, did $1200 damage to the car trying to get into it after us.”
His experience came rushing back in July 2020 when another chimp escape from the same compound was caught on a grainy cell phone video.
Then there was another chimp escape last summer — at least the third time the animals got out.
Coats, meanwhile, fought for his name back.
“Also a lot of other people wrote letters in for me, which was overwhelming. I can’t thank them enough for that and, you know, the judge finally just let common sense and reasoning take the day 20 years later and granted me my expungement,” he said.
Coats' newly clean record came right before animal-rights group PETA successfully won a court order to have the Festus chimps moved to an accredited animal sanctuary in Florida.
Six chimpanzees were seized Thursday under U.S. Marshal oversight. Coats watched it all unfold on TV.
“I think it’s kind of poetic justice it happened back-to-back within days,” he said.
PETA’s lawyer, Jared Goodman, spoke about Coats' dilemma with KTVI.
“It’s a difficult situation, but it just goes to show you the importance of ensuring that these chimpanzees are held in an adequate environment and don’t have the opportunity to escape," Goodman said.
"Frankly, we’re very lucky about Mikayla and the other two chimpanzees who escaped their enclosures last year didn’t end up the same way that Suzie did.”
Coats added, “Being a felon holds you back in a lot of different ways, and you know, I just always had to put a mark on an application. It keeps you from doing government jobs and lots of different things.
TOKYO (NEXSTAR) — There were more medals in the pool from team USA including one from superstar Katie Ledecky.
Ledecky defended her title in the 800-meter freestyle bringing home her third straight gold medal in that event. She is the first woman to do it in history.
Ledecky took the lead early on and never let go, furthering herself from the rest of the women with every lap. She has the 23 fastest times in the event and this marks her 7th gold medal.
"I’m very proud of 2 golds and 2 silvers. Of course, I’m always competing to win. I dive in every race, hoping to get my hands on the wall first," said Ledecky. "As I said earlier, I was very happy with my 400 free where I went my second best time ever and really competed and I think I put myself in the race in a good way."
In Tokyo, she’s won gold in the 1500 free, silver in the 400 free, and silver in the 4x200 freestyle relay.
She did not medal in the 200 free.
When asked if this was her last Olympic race, Leedecky said no way. She said she’ll definitely be back in 2024 and maybe even 2028.

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — Saturday morning, the community of Hampton Roads Academy stepped up in a big way. A school supply donation was their entry fee to their first ever 5 on 5 soccer tournament.
“It’s a great thing for us to do. We're in education, we know the strains on all of our education system and especially with the pandemic and the need is there,” said Hampton Roads Academy’s Peter Mertz. "If we can put the proper tools in the hands of our student's area-wide, that's exactly what we should be doing,”
Mertz said word of their goal with operation school supplies spread fast to teachers, students, and parents.
For Demi Moore, whose son attends Hampton Roads Academy, it was a message heard loud and clear. She immediately turned to an organization she's a part of, Sistas with Jeeps, to help out.
The group with members across the area were on a mission to fill up their Jeeps for today's donation station, an effort that was a success.
“We have a lot of community events we do, and one we were going to do is back to school. So with my son going to school here, I felt like it was a good partnership with us to come and give back,” said Moore.
Many other donations came in the form of a fleet of Chargers and Challengers. Moore reached out to the members of the 3MC Car Club of Virginia Beach to push their efforts even further.
With a pop of the trunk, tons of bookbags filled with the essentials were revealed.
“A lot of us come from unfortunate families so we know what it feels like to not have as much so it's really easy for us to contribute. Obviously, we have enough money to put gas in these cars, so we have enough to give back to the community," said 3MC member, Jeremy Ford.
From school officials to local car clubs, it's easy to see, there's no lack of giving back at Hampton Roads Academy.

ScreenHunter Pro incl Patch is a convenient program that can help you capture the desktop, after processing the resulting image in a special image editor, in the full news you can download ScreenHunter. The author of the program has a rather positive attitude towards his development, it is understandable, in general, the point is that the official website says that the program can take pictures not only of a separate window, but also of any element in it, maybe someone can like it, in generally know.
ScreenHunter, in addition to what was written above, is able to capture any text in programs, it is also quite a handy thing, although the tool is not unique in its kind. This feature should be pleasant in cases where the standard copy function refuses to work. You can also connect the scanner to the computer and then transfer the images directly to the program and then edit them, as described above, in the built-in editor, which, by the way, has a normal number of functions.
Of course ScreenHunter allows you to take pictures of any selected area, and this area can be any shape you need, whoever has enough imagination for that. There is also support for working with hotkeys, they cannot be edited, but it’s worth studying. ScreenHunter has a simple appearance, it does not shine with any colors and other joys, everything is rather boring and dull, but as you know, this is not the most important thing. The program does not have Russian localization, this of course can be called a minus, the good news is that there are not so many functions and everything is clear.
Additional features include the ability to send images to e-mail, there is support for capturing images of programs running under MS-DOS, in automatic mode, you can adjust the transparency level, even video capture is present. I would like to introduce you to such an interesting program, I hope ScreenHunter can be useful and replace your usual utilities in this area, if, of course, it deserves it, we do not forget about registration, there is a simple serial with which it is not difficult to handle. Developer: isdom Software Inc License: ShareWare Language: English Size: 136 MB OS: Windows How to Install: 1). Instructions are included in ReadMe.txt if needed. 2). That is all, Done & enjoy. You can choose between a horizontal, polar or equatorial sundial, as well as one of many countries and location options. The app also provides coordinates and time zone options for each location, you can edit them or add your own. Once you make your choice, you can customize the look of the sundial with a 24-hour numbering system, additional lines for every 30, 15 or 5 minutes, and customizable shapes ranging from rectangular to elliptical to hexagonal. In addition, you can also choose whether to draw the analemma curve on each hour line and shift it by longitude correction or not.
To find the average time for a selected date, you must refer to the equation of time, which is a curve that you can study to add the correct value to the solar time and get the average time.
The Shadows program (in order to use this application for free, you just need to download the latest version on our project, in the full news, just below this text, there is a link, click and download the program, then unpack and in the archive we have a crack and a key , they can help you register Shadows and get the Pro version that you can use without restrictions) displays a graph, it shows the time in minutes which you should check and which can then be added to your overall picture. Once you have finished designing a sundial or astrolabe and configured all the necessary parameters, the drawing can be easily printed directly from the application along with all the lines and marks that you have chosen. You can also export the file as an AutoCAD compatible DXF document.

LAS VEGAS (KLAS) – A Las Vegas father who contracted COVID-19 while on vacation texted his fiancee from the hospital, “I should have gotten the damn vaccine,” she later told Nexstar's KLAS.
Michael Freedy, 39, a father of five, and his fiancee, Jessica du Preez, traveled with their family to San Diego in mid-July.

When Freedy returned home, he developed a painful skin rash, du Preez said.
“He was getting chills, couldn’t eat, couldn’t get comfortable, couldn’t sleep,” du Preez said. “All symptoms of sun poisoning.”
He later tested positive for coronavirus and developed difficulty breathing with pneumonia in both lungs, du Preez said.
“Oh my [expletive] God. This is terrible,” Freedy sent du Preez in a text message from the hospital. “I should have gotten the damn vaccine.”

“I went to the ICU that night to see him, after getting one of the worst phone call updates ever,” du Preez wrote in a GoFundMe post. “The nurse told me to contact next of kin and to take all of his belongings home with me.”
Du Preez said Freedy died in the hospital Thursday morning.
"We were just holding off and now to think that if we just had gotten the shot a week before or a month before when one of our jobs had a vaccination thing, he could still be here," she said.
Both du Preez and her eldest child got the first dose of the vaccine when Freedy was admitted to the hospital, she said.
She hopes her family's story prompts others to take the virus seriously and avoid a similar tragedy. A GoFundMe for the family had raised nearly $20,000 as of noon Friday.

CHESAPEAKE, Va. (WAVY) -- Area police departments are competing to recruit new officers on their respective forces by offering various incentives, such as higher starting pay, sign-on bonuses, etc.
In Chesapeake, officials are looking at ways to also retain the officers they already have.
Chesapeake City Manager Chris Price plans to bring forward a resolution to provide Chesapeake police officers with a $5,000 retention bonus.
The bonus will counter Virginia Beach police's $5,000 recruitment bonus that was discussed at a meeting this month. Price said many police departments are offering incentives for new officers in an attempt to fix staffing issues.
In the presentation, Price said one of City Council's goals in its strategic plan is to improve safety and security in part by reducing the police department's turnover.
"We are committed to our team. We've trained them, we've invested in them," Price said. "I think it's the right thing to do.
He said Chesapeake is also trying to remain a "market leader" in the pay scale for public safety employees. The city is working on a "classification and compensation study" to evaluate the stepped pay scale for public safety employees. Price has asked those working on the study to accelerate the classification and compensation part for public safety employees.
Price plans to bring the retention bonuses to the agenda for the Aug. 10 City Council meeting. Soon after, he hopes city officials will bring forward a structure forward for consideration on pay and classifications.
Virginia Beach's $5,000 sign-on bonus was created after the department revamped how it hires lateral transfers from other Virginia police departments.
The goal was to cherry-pick the best and brightest from other departments, the deputy police chief said during a meeting this month.
The new starting pay for Norfolk police officers is now $50,800 per year beginning at the start of the fiscal year, compared to its previous rate of about $43,500 a year.
